Skutt KM-1027 vs L&L e23T: Same Circuit, $1,241 Apart

Both draw 48 amps on a 60-amp circuit with #6 copper and a NEMA 6-50. Verified August 2026 prices, element-set costs and a ten-year ownership total.

Both kilns need the same circuit: 48 amps at 240 volts, a 60 amp breaker, #6 copper and a NEMA 6-50. Both burn 86.4 kilowatt hours per cone 6 glaze firing, which is $15.93 at the national average rate. The KM-1027 sells for $3,548 and the e23T for $4,789. What the $1,241 buys is three-zone control, an extra year of warranty, and element changes without a screwdriver.

That first sentence contradicts a lot of what is written about these two kilns, including an earlier version of our own e23T review. It is worth being specific about why.

Are the electrical requirements really identical?

For a home studio on single-phase power, yes, exactly. Here are both manufacturers’ published configurations side by side, read from authorised dealer spec listings on 2 August 2026.

The two single-phase rows are the same numbers twice. Same draw, same breaker, same conductors, same receptacle, and the same 9,980 watt derate when you run either on 208 volt building power. If your garage already has a 60 amp circuit and a 6-50 outlet from a previous kiln, either of these plugs into it.

The 60 amp breaker on a 48 amp draw is not a safety margin somebody invented. A kiln firing for ten hours is a continuous load under NFPA 70, and 210.20(A) requires the breaker to be rated at 125 percent of it. Forty-eight times 1.25 is exactly 60.

Two claims circulate that this table refutes. The e23T does not require 4 AWG copper or a NEMA L6-60R twist-lock; L&L’s own configuration table specifies 6 gauge and a 6-50 cordset. And the KM-1027 does not run on a 50 amp circuit; at 48 amps continuous it needs the same 60 as the L&L. The by-model detail for every kiln we cover sits in the kiln electrical requirements guide.

Three phase is where they finally differ, and only in wire gauge: L&L specifies 10 gauge at 27.7 amps where Skutt specifies 8 gauge at 29.3. That affects schools and commercial studios, not garages.

What does each kiln actually cost to own for ten years?

This is the table that settles the argument, and it is not the one either dealer shows you.

Assume two firings a week, which is a busy home studio: 52 bisque loads and 52 glaze loads a year. Assume one full set of elements every two years, so four sets across ten years. Both kilns are rated 11,520 watts, so the energy per firing is identical, and the element sets happen to cost within $12 of each other.

Element sets: Skutt full set $444 from Sheffield Pottery; L&L six large elements at $76 each from L&L’s own parts store, $456. Energy from L&L’s segment duty-cycle method on each kiln’s 11.52 kW rating, at the EIA’s US average residential rate of 18.44 cents per kWh for May 2026. Your rate is the variable that actually matters: at Hawaii’s 43 cents the electricity column roughly doubles, and at North Dakota rates it falls by a third.

Three things worth pulling out.

The price gap is 6.7 percent of what you will spend. People agonise over $1,241 on a $3,500 machine, which feels like 35 percent. Measured against the decade of firings that follows, it is under seven cents on the dollar.

Electricity is roughly seven times the purchase-price difference. If you want to save money on a kiln, pack it fuller and fire it less often. The brand on the lid is a rounding error next to your firing schedule.

Element sets cost almost the same. $444 against $456, a difference of $12 across a full set. This matters because L&L’s element-holder advantage is often described as saving money on elements. It does not. The elements cost the same. What the holders save is time and risk, which is a real thing, just not a line on this table.

So what is the element holder difference actually worth?

L&L routes each element through a hard ceramic holder that stands proud of the wall. Skutt seats elements in grooves cut into the soft firebrick. Both approaches have run for decades and both work.

The practical difference shows up on the day an element fails. On the L&L the coil slides out of its holder and a new one slides in. On the Skutt you lift the old coil out of a brick groove, and if that groove has degraded over fifteen years of thermal cycling, small pieces of refractory can come with it and want patching before the new element goes down.

There is a second-order effect worth naming honestly, because it cuts the other way from what you would expect. L&L’s own argument for the holders is that the dense ceramic does not insulate the element from the chamber, and that the smooth channel lets the coil expand and contract freely rather than binding. That is a longevity claim about the element, not just a convenience claim about replacing it. Skutt’s counter-argument is its own: the KM-1027 uses more total element wire in deeper grooves, so each element works less hard at a given temperature.

Which one holds more work?

The Skutt, by about a tenth. Both chambers are 27 inches deep. The difference is diameter.

Published capacities and diameters from the dealer listings above. Usable shelf diameter assumes 1 inch of clearance from the wall on each side, five shelf levels at roughly 5.5 inches per tier for mug-height work, and 80 percent packing efficiency to allow the air gaps a glaze load needs. Change any of those assumptions and the counts move; the 10 percent gap between the two kilns does not.

One extra inch of diameter does not sound like much. Squared and multiplied across five shelf levels, it is five more mugs per glaze firing, or about one extra load’s worth of work in every eleven firings.

Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you fill either kiln. Most home studios do not, most of the time, and a half-full kiln costs the same to run as a full one. If you regularly fire partial loads, capacity is not your constraint and this table should not sway you.

Which controller, and is three zones worth it?

Both are Bartlett-family controllers. That is the fact most comparisons miss while arguing about interfaces.

The Skutt KilnMaster is a 12-key panel with ramp-and-hold programming and current-sensing diagnostics that flag an aging element before it fails a load. Dated to look at, thoroughly understood by every kiln tech in the country, and Skutt sells a KMT touchscreen upgrade if you want the modern face.

The L&L Genesis is a touchscreen with three independently controlled zones. It comes standard on the e23T-3; you do not pay extra for it.

Zone control is the e23T’s clearest functional advantage, and it is worth being precise about when it earns its money. A tall top-loader tends to run cooler at the top and bottom rings than in the middle, because the ends radiate into the lid and the floor. A single-zone controller reads one thermocouple and fires everything together. A three-zone controller trims each ring against its own thermocouple.

For cone 6 functional ware, single zone is fine and millions of pots prove it. For crystalline glazes, for reduction-look schedules with long holds, or for any firing where a two-cone spread top to bottom would ruin the load, zone control stops being a checkbox. The tell that you need it is simple and cheap to find out: put witness cones at the top, middle and bottom of a full load and see whether they agree. Warranty, weight, and the two things people find out late

Warranty. L&L covers the e23T for three years. Skutt covers the KM-1027 for two, with elements excluded. On a machine that should run twenty years neither covers the productive life, but three against two is a real difference in early-failure coverage and it is one of the honest things the extra $1,241 buys.

Weight. The e23T ships at 365 pounds, or 455 with the furniture kit. The KM-1027 ships at 290. That 75 pound difference is the one people discover on delivery day, and it decides whether two people can walk a kiln down a basement stairwell or whether you are hiring help. Both are sectional, so both come apart into rings, but the L&L’s 3 inch brick is heavier per ring. Read the kiln placement guide before the truck arrives, not after.

What is in the box. The Skutt listing includes the stand, peep plugs and lid lifter. L&L’s e23T-3 packages are sold with or without a vent and furniture kit, and the difference between the 365 and 455 pound shipping weights is exactly that kit. Compare configured prices, not headline prices, because a furniture kit is several hundred dollars either way.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Skutt KM-1027 if you are firing cone 6 functional ware in a home studio. It costs $1,241 less, holds about 10 percent more, weighs 75 pounds less to get into position, and gives up nothing that a mug or a bowl can detect. It is the right default, and the fact that used ones barely appear on the resale market is the most persuasive reliability data either brand has. The full picture is in the KM-1027 review.

Buy the L&L e23T if temperature evenness is part of your work. Crystalline glazing, long holds, tall stacked loads where a two-cone spread would be a disaster: three-zone control is the answer to those problems and it is standard equipment here. The three year warranty and the element holders are real, and they compound for someone who fires hard for fifteen years. The e23T review goes deeper on the holder system.

Buy neither if your panel cannot spare 60 amps. Both kilns need the same dedicated circuit and there is no clever way around it. That buyer wants a smaller kiln on a 50 amp or 30 amp supply, and the first kiln buying guide walks the whole ladder from a 120 volt test kiln upward.

One last number, because it reframes everything above. Fire twice a week for ten years and you will spend roughly $13,250 on electricity through either kiln, against a purchase-price difference of $1,241. Pick the kiln that fits your work and your stairwell, then spend the energy you saved arguing about it on packing the shelves properly.
